Today, as in the past, hunting represents an integral component to the Métis harvesting tradition in this area. Moose are a highly sought after big game animal. They are an important source of subsistence for Métis harvesters, their families and the community. Moose are harvested widely across the region, including on all sides of Lake Nipigon and the watershed areas south of Lake Nipigon to Lake Superior. There is a close connection between the harvesters, the water and the collection of meat through moose harvesting. Other species harvested in the region include White-tailed deer, Bear, rabbit, upland game birds and migratory birds such as geese and ducks.Fishing for sustenance has important family, historical and cultural significance to the Métis way of life. The region boasts a very healthy population of several fish species such as Walleye (Pickerel), Northern Pike (Jackfish), Lake Trout and Perch that are sought after to provide food for individuals and families alike. These fish species are abundant, being harvested throughout the region by Métis harvesters.
