Fort William, preserved as Fort William Historical Park, was used as a fur trade post at different times by the Northwest Company (NWC) and the Hudson Bay Company (HBC). It was prominent in the earliest days of the Fur Trade and origins of the Métis in Canada.When NWC was amalgamated into the HBC in 1821, Fort William became a minor district headquarters. The fur trade spurred a long line of Métis trappers and Métis in the region still trap today.
